As the Director of Development for the College of Nursing, Lilia Correa, MPA, knows firsthand the incredible work of students, faculty and staff and the meaningful impact donors can make on the future of the college.

What makes MUSC College of Nursing such a dynamic and special community?

The people. Everywhere you turn there is a student who is starting a new journey, a professor who teaches or innovates through research, a compassionate health care provider or an amazing role model who exemplifies leadership. I learn something new every day!

What do you enjoy most about your work and being part of the college?

It’s a pleasure to be part of such a vibrant and energetic environment as the college. Everyone here is passionate about the nursing profession and dedicated to serving the community. Compassion is at the heart of nursing, exemplified by students who dream of becoming nurses, researchers who conduct studies that lead to advancing patient care knowledge and educators who help our graduates succeed.

How does donor support impact the mission of the College of Nursing and those it serves?

A diverse and healthy nursing workforce is one of the college's top priorities in order to ensure sufficient graduates to fulfill patient care in South Carolina. Currently, our state is #1 on the list of states with the fewest nurses per capita, which translates into 7.8 nurses per 1,000 people. Donor support is essential in reducing financial barriers for students entering the profession, advancing their careers and ensuring there are enough faculty to train them. We’ve known about the nursing shortage in America, but now it may be the most critical, taking place at a time when the nation’s aging population is pushing demand for care to all-time highs.

How can donors help to shape the future of nursing education?

We rely on the generous support of donors who help us enrich the future of health care. For example, the impact of a planned gift (including the College of Nursing in your estate plans) can be greater than a donor imagined and can make a profound difference for the College of Nursing. Donors may find special opportunities to remember, share and connect when they join the Legacy Society. They are invited to take part in special events, share their story, and be honored for their special ties to us. The IRA Charitable Rollover (or the Qualified Charitable Distribution) is a great way to make a tax-free gift before the end of the year and satisfy your Required Minimum Distribution.

What is your favorite thing about working with MUSC College of Nursing donors?

I enjoy hearing their stories and learning what has shaped their lives. In conversation, they share about their family, their plans to travel or what motivates them to give back to the community. Everyone's story is different, but the intentions are the same. It is such an honor to serve as the vehicle for their philanthropic dreams.

Fun fact:

I have a stained glass and mosaic art studio in my home, and I love working with different types of glass. The vast array of colors gives me joy.
