General Program Information

What is the focus of this Program?

Focuses on upskilling newly graduated psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) in integrated behavioral health within primary care.


What is the Program's Structure and focus?

  • 80% hands-on experience with direct patient care.
  • 20% education, clinical support, and professional development.
  • Mentorship from Psychiatrists and PMHNPs.


Can you explain what the Integrated Collaborative Care Model means?

  • Patients are referred by primary care providers for assessment, diagnosis, and medication recommendations.
  • The program includes both telehealth and in-person models.
  • Psychiatrists and PMHNPs provide consultative support, with the ability to prescribe medication in in-person models.


What type of Patient Care and Appointment Structure is expected?
 

  • Serves patients aged 5-65 with diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and PTSD.
  • Appointment lengths: 1 hour for new patients, 30 minutes for return visits.
  • Patient load: Starts with 2-3 patients per day, ramping up to 9-12 by the end of the program.


What type of training and support is offered?

  • Training in Psychopharmacology, Psychotherapy, Integrated Primary Care Behavioral Health, and working with populations with limited resources.
  • Emphasizes mentorship and real-time consultation.

Program includes training in Psychopharmacology, Psychotherapy, Telehealth Care Delivery, and Complex Behavioral Health Diagnosis.

 

Eligibility and Application Information

Is the program designed for someone who graduated recently?

Eligibility is for new graduates within two years of completing their program from a Psychiatric Mental Health NP program. 


How many positions are there?

Two positions are available in the program.


What is the pay scale and compensation structure associated with the Fellowship?

  • The salary for the program is $88,000 per year.
  • This is a full-time position with state benefits, including health insurance and leave.
  • The program runs from Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, with 2-3 days a week of in-person commitment.
  • Transition goal to a full-time position at the Medical University of South Carolina after program completion.

 

Logistics and Contact Information

Do you have to move to the Charleston area?

YES! You must live or relocate within driving distance to the Charleston area. The program offers 50% telehealth and 50% in-person hours.


What is the due date for the essay, letters of recommendation, and other application materials?
The application materials, including the essay and letters of recommendation, are due by April 1st, 2025. You must submit them at the same time that you apply.
