The Palliative Care Advanced Practice Provider Externship is a week-long immersion course led by faculty who are nationally and internationally known palliative care experts. This immersion is geared toward the practice of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) and Physician Assistants (PAs).

Content includes a didactic and clinical component offering principles of care, pain and symptom management, communication, program development, quality metrics, as well as specific leadership and professional development.

Externship Eligibility:

  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurses in any setting - (Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Anesthetist, Nurse Midwife)
  • Physician Assistants in any role or setting
  • Students enrolled in APRN or PA program

Continuing Education: Pending; includes a 3-day didactic component, 2-day clinical experience, and post-course mentoring.

2024 Externship Dates

3-Day Virtual Trainings (Live)

  • February 24 – 26, 2025
  • October 8 – 10, 2025

Courses are typically scheduled for 8 hours daily (9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST). Please note that start and end times may vary to accommodate participant and faculty needs, particularly for those in different time zones.

2-Day Clinical Mentoring Experience in Charleston, SC: Dates adapted to the extern's needs and determined after application.

Cost

  • $2600 for practicing APRNs and PAs
  • $1800 for current students enrolled in accredited APRN/PA programs
  • $2000 for MUSC employees

*Tuition fee is paid directly to MUSC upon acceptance. Includes Continuing Education for nurses.

The participant is responsible for travel costs (room, board, and transportation) associated with clinical experience.

*Cancellation Policy: A $300 fee will apply if a participant cancels within one month of the scheduled course. There is no charge if the participant reschedules a future course.
Rescheduling Policy: As a one-time courtesy, we are pleased to offer participants the opportunity to reschedule for a future session of their choice within one year of the payment date.
