MUSC Nurses Give ABSN Students a Glimpse into the Real World

In a lively and candid panel hosted at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) College of Nursing, a dozen practicing nurses—many of them alumni—returned to speak with Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) students about the realities of transitioning from the classroom to the clinical floor. The discussion featured nurses in emergency medicine, aesthetics, hospice care, pediatric cardiology, interventional radiology, oncology and nurse practitioner roles. Each panelist offered honest insight into career trajectories, clinical challenges and lessons learned.

Beyond the Bedside: Careers Take Many Shapes

Panelists highlighted how the nursing profession opens doors to a variety of career paths-both traditional and nontraditional. From aesthetic nursing to telehealth, infusion services and global health, the discussion showcased the scope of roles nurses can take on after graduation. Some began their careers in med-surg or critical care, while others entered directly into specialty or outpatient settings, proving there is no single path to success.

Many emphasized that while med-surg is a solid foundation for time management and patient care fundamentals, it's not a requirement for every nurse. Instead, students were encouraged to reflect on their own goals, interests and learning styles when considering job offers or clinical placements.

The First Year: Growth, Grace and Grit

Panelists were honest about the transition from nursing school to professional practice. Several spoke openly about the anxiety and pressure that comes with being a new graduate. The consensus: be prepared to feel overwhelmed-and know that it's normal.

"You're not going to know everything and that's okay," one nurse shared. "It's more important to be safe, ask questions and keep learning."

Tips from the field included keeping a running note of new terminology or scenarios to research later, seeking out experiences like observing surgeries or procedures during orientation and cultivating strong relationships with preceptors and teammates. Many also stressed the importance of advocating for oneself—especially when it comes to learning preferences and support during onboarding.

Professionalism and Perspective

A central theme of the panel was maintaining a human connection in the face of clinical demands. Whether working in high-acuity environments or outpatient clinics, nurses emphasized the importance of compassion and communication.

"Patients are experiencing one of the worst days of their lives. Be the person who slows down, explains and listens," one said.

Additionally, panelists encouraged students to embrace lifelong learning, keep an open mind about specialties, and remember that nursing, while rewarding, doesn't have to be an all-consuming identity. It's okay to pursue stability, work-life balance and even side gigs, like clinical education or community outreach.

To close the session, each speaker offered parting advice to the next generation of nurses. Their words emphasized resilience, curiosity and authenticity.

"Take advantage of student discounts and professional associations."

"Be an early adopter of change. Evidence evolves-so should you."

"Learn to be a nurse before you jump to your next credential."

"Introduce yourself, ask questions and show up eager to learn."

"Nursing doesn't have to be your calling-it can also just be your career. But don't be bad at it."
