AHRQ establishes a broad base of scientific research to promote improvements in clinical and health system practices, including the prevention of diseases and other health conditions.

HRSA, Health Resources and Services Administration

HRSA Health Professions grants and cooperative agreements support innovations and targeted expansions in health professions education and training. Emphasis is on increasing the diversity of the health care workforce and preparing health care providers to serve diverse populations  

ANF, American Nurses Foundation

The Research Grants Program of the ANF was founded over 56 years ago to encourage the research career development of nurses. 

HSR&D (VA), Health Services Research & Development (Veterans Affairs)

HSR&D projects are often multidisciplinary activities. They involve expertise in a combination of clinical fields (medicine and all its specialties, nursing, and other health care professions), social sciences (especially psychology, sociology, economics, and organization theory), and multiple research approaches and methods (experimental and quasi-experimental studies, survey research, database analyses, biostatistics, psychometrics, econometrics, modeling techniques, etc.). 

BAA, Broad Agency Announcements

The Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) is a competitive solicitation procedure used to obtain proposals for basic and applied research and that part of development not related to the development of a specific system or hardware procurement. The BAA is described in FAR 6.102, "Use of Competitive Procedures," and FAR 35.016, "Broad Agency Announcements."

NEH is an independent grant-making agency of the United States government dedicated to supporting research, education, preservation, and public programs in the humanities

NIH, National Institutes of Health

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service, is the primary Federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research. state and throughout the world.Each year, Federal funds are obligated by Congress for the pursuit of research objectives. Each Institute determines how to allocate its own funds among many different activities of science. 

CFDA, Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance

CFDA is a government-wide compendium of federal programs and activities that provide financial assistance to a variety of recipients. The catalog is updated twice a year by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and published by the Government Printing Office (GPO). 


NIJ, National Institute of Justice 

The National Institute of Justice - the research, development and evaluation agency of the U.S. Department of Justice - is dedicated to improving knowledge and understanding of crime and justice issues through science. NIJ provides objective and independent knowledge and tools to reduce crime and promote justice, particularly at the state and local levels.

NSF, The National Science Foundation

NSF is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 "to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure the national defense. NSF is the funding source for approximately 20 percent of all federally supported basic research conducted by America's colleges and universities.  

CSR&D (VA), Clinical Science Research and Development (Veterans Affairs)

 Clinical Science Research and Development (CSR&D) supports research focusing on intact human beings as the unit of examination. Examples include interventional and effectiveness studies, clinical, epidemiological and technological studies. CSR&D supports a diverse portfolio of clinical trials from small single-site studies to large multisite definitive trials through the Cooperative Studies Program (CSP). In addition to conducting multisite clinical trials and system-wide epidemiological investigations, CSP also provides infrastructure support for the Million Veteran Program

OMH, The Office of Minority Health

OMH was established by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health in 1987. OMH-RC serves as a national resource and referral service on minority health issues. OMH organizes demonstration projects through joint agreements with operating divisions of the Department of Health and Human Services. 

DoD/CDMRP, Department of Defense/Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs

The office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) manages Congressional Special Interest Medical Research Programs (CSI) encompassing breast, prostate, and ovarian cancers, neurofibromatosis, military health, and other specified areas. Since fiscal year 1992, the CDMRP has managed approximately over $7.7 billion in Congressional appropriations for peer-reviewed research aimed to prevent, control, and cure disease. Through fiscal year 2013, approximately 12,423 awards have been made to advance health care solutions via extramural grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements.

Grants.gov allows organizations to electronically find and apply for competitive grant opportunities from all Federal grant-making agencies. Grants.gov is THE single access point for over 900 grant programs offered by the 26 Federal grant-making agencies.

SAMHSA, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration

SAMHSA works to improve the quality and availability of substance abuse prevention, addiction treatment and mental health services.  SAMHSA provides funding through block grants to states to support substance abuse and mental health services.  

PCORI, Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute

PCORI funds research studies that focus on patient-centered outcomes, rather than only on comparative effectiveness research alone. Patient-centered outcomes research involves questions and outcomes that are "meaningful and important to patients and caregivers" in order to help those individuals make informed decisions for their own care.
