Frequently Asked Questions

Graduate

If you are new to precepting for MUSC College of Nursing, Clinical preceptors for our graduate programs must complete the Clinical Preceptor Information Form and abbreviated CV Form prior to the student beginning the clinical experience. Students will provide these forms to their preceptors and then submit these completed documents to the Clinical Education Coordinator. Clinical preceptors must also provide either a copy of their license and specialty certification or their licensure information to the Clinical Education Coordinator at MUSC College of Nursing. If you have precepted with us before, the only items we would need are any updates to certification, licensure, and employment locations - everything else is already on file!

Undergraduate

Your student preceptee will need to collect your resume/CV to complete your clinical preceptor data sheet – everything else is verified by your unit manager, whom we will be in touch with.

Graduate

Clinical preceptors complete the student’s midterm and/or final clinical evaluation and review it with clinical faculty during required phone conference and/or email communication. Mid-semester and/or final evaluations must be completed by the clinical preceptor and reviewed with the student.

Undergraduate

Evaluate the student verbally with the Faculty Preceptor throughout the experience using the clinical evaluation tool (provided by the student) and participate in a midterm and/or final clinical evaluation of the preceptor experience.

Clinical preceptors facilitate an informal collaborative and mutually respectful environment in which to learn; review course objectives and the student’s clinical objectives to determine learning opportunities; direct the student to resources and evidence-based readings; provide daily feedback to improve assessment, management, and presentation skills; provide a variety of learning experiences with appropriate client populations; encourage participation in interdisciplinary team meetings when available; and facilitate the student’s progressive independence in clinical knowledge and skills by supporting autonomous assessment and evaluation.
