Music and Mind: Harnessing the Arts for Health and Wellness

Renée Fleming – celebrated soprano, five-time GRAMMY® Award winner, and 2023 Kennedy Center Honoree.  Joining Ms. Fleming will be Sundaravadivel Balasubramanian, Ph.D., Angela Burdine, MT-BC, NICU-MT, Alvin Lee Lewis, M.D.

Ms. Fleming is a leading advocate for the study of the powerful connections between the arts and health. During her tenure as Artistic Advisor to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Ms. Fleming spearheaded a collaboration with the National Institutes of health (NIH), with the participation of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). The Sound Health initiative explored and brought attention to research and practice at the intersection of music, health and neuroscience. The collaboration led to workshops at the NIH, and events and performances at the Kennedy Center. In the wake of this initiative, the NIH awarded $20 million in funding for music and neuroscience research over five years. The Renée Fleming Foundation also partnered with the Foundation for the NIH to develop a toolkit for standardizing music and health clinical research for brain disorders of aging.
