“It Felt Like Home”: One Nurse’s Journey into CON’s Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Program

May 05, 2026

For nurses who feel the pull to do more—to step beyond the bedside and into a role where they can shape care systems, influence policy and lead teams, the path to a Doctor of Nursing Practice can feel both exciting and overwhelming. Adrienne H. Wood, BSN, RN, currently enrolled in the College of Nursing Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Program, knows that tension firsthand.

A former Licensed Practical Nurse who spent years working in rural South Carolina, she’d witnessed the gaps in her community: chronic illness going unmanaged, palliative care out of reach and patients who simply fell through the cracks.

College of Nursing program gave her a way to do something about it. We sat down with her to hear her story.

What made you choose MUSC’s DNP/MSN program?
I chose MUSC because it felt like home to me. I previously worked with MUSC as a Licensed Practical Nurse and respected their values for their patients. I’ve worked in rural health care and have seen firsthand the gaps patients face, especially with chronic illness and access to services like palliative care. MUSC’s focus on serving communities like mine and actually turning evidence into real change really spoke to me.

What has surprised you most about the experience?
Honestly, how much I’ve grown—not just academically, but as a person. It’s pushed me to think bigger than just the patient in front of me and really look at the whole system. What’s also stood out is how much the College of Nursing truly cares about you—not just as a student, but as a person. Life happens, and they are supportive in a way that makes you feel seen and valued, not just like a number.

What would you tell a nurse who’s on the fence about applying?
I’d tell them I was in your shoes at one point, too. It’s a huge, life-altering step, but if you care about making a difference, it’s worth it. You’ll be challenged, but you’ll also grow in ways you didn’t expect—and you won’t regret taking that chance on yourself.
