Fifth Annual Palliative Care Showcase Spotlights Global Learning and Collaboration

The MUSC College of Nursing hosted its fifth annual Palliative Care Showcase on Aug. 19, bringing together faculty, clinicians, researchers and students to explore advancements in palliative care and highlight work taking place across MUSC and around the world.

The event opened with a keynote address from Carrie L. Cormack, DNP, CPNP, FPCN, FAAN, who offered attendees a window into her work in global palliative care. Her remarks set the stage for a panel discussion with nationally recognized leaders in the field, including Betty Ferrell, Ph.D.; Judith Paice, Ph.D., RN; Patrick Coyne, MSN, APRN, ACHPN, FAAN, FPCN; and Dr. Cormack. Together, the panelists reflected their international work and the growing demand for compassionate, patient-centered approaches across a range of health care settings.

Over the past five years, the Showcase has evolved from highlighting MUSC’s palliative care efforts in education, clinical practice and research into a global forum for learning and collaboration.

“When we started, the goal was to highlight the excellent palliative care work happening across MUSC in education, clinical practice and research, while bringing in a keynote speaker to deepen attendees’ knowledge,” said Kathy Lindell, PhD, RN, ATSF, FAAN. “We have far exceeded that vision and now showcase palliative care work from around the world.”

This year’s program also included a poster presentation highlighting palliative care work across the lifespan. Students and researchers used the session to present original work and connect with colleagues from across the MUSC community.

Among the projects presented, Beyond Borders: Student Lessons in Practice from a Global Palliative Educational Immersion received first place. The poster was presented by Talina Seabrook, Belicia DeBose, Gabriela Ruiz-Coss and Karissa Johnson. Entries were reviewed by Timothy Stemmler, DNP, CRNA, CHSE; Judith Paice, Ph.D., RN; and Vanessa Battista, Ph.D.

From local classrooms to global health systems, the Showcase reflected MUSC’s continued investment in shaping the future of palliative care. As the event continues to grow, it remains a space for meaningful connection and collaboration across the palliative care community.
