Nursing Education Electives

The MUSC College of Nursing offers three courses related to education.  These can be taken as electives for those enrolled in one of our graduate programs of study.  They can also be taken by non-degree students who wish to complete these courses in order to sit for national certification as a nurse educator.

Course Descriptions

NURSM 703 Instructional Processes (Spring Only) – 3 s.h.

This course covers development of a variety of teaching methodologies to enhance learning outcomes of diverse populations in the classroom, simulation, and clinical settings. Study of theories, principles, frameworks, and pedagogies for healthcare education. Examination of teaching strategies, learning activities, and evaluation strategies for the development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs. Opportunity for application of evidence-based instructional and evaluation strategies in classroom, clinical, and simulation settings. Prerequisite: Graduate standing

NURSM 615 Methodologies of Online Teaching (Summer) – 3 s.h.

Study and application of the knowledge in creating an online course utilizing design rubrics. Methodologies of online instruction as well as evaluation will be included. Students will be introduced to course management platforms and other technology support systems. Opportunity for application of evidence-based strategies with an online educational offering. Prerequisite: NURSM 703: Instructional Processes

NURSM 713 (formerly NRPHD 725) Curriculum Development & Design (Fall Only) – 3 s.h.

This course focuses on the study of philosophical foundations and essential components of curriculum development. Examination of selected curriculum frameworks from philosophical and contextual perspectives will be undertaken. Construction of a curriculum package for diverse learners in a classroom, clinical, or simulation setting that reflects paradigmatic and contextual influences. Curriculum assessment and evaluation are discussed in the context of program, course, and student outcomes and objectives. Prerequisite: NURSM 703: Instructional Processes

Mentored Teaching is an optional course that provides the opportunity to work with a seasoned educator of their choice. This course is not required to sit for the CNE exam.

NRPHD 800 Mentored Teaching (All Semesters) - 3 s.h.

This elective course will provide students with the opportunity to work with a faculty member in order to explore the role of educator. Students will identify their learning needs and specific activities will be designed with the faculty mentor. Prerequisite courses: NURSM 703 Instructional Processes and NURSM 615 Online Methodologies (to be taken in that order).

Requirements to take Certified Nurse Educator Exam

In addition to holding an active, unencumbered RN license, there are two requirement options to sit for the CNE exam, which are:

Education: A master’s or doctoral degree in nursing with:

1. A major emphasis in nursing education,or

2. post-master's certificate in nursing education,or

3. Nine or more credit hours of graduate level education courses*

*Examples of acceptable graduate-level education courses include:

Curriculum Development and Evaluation; Instructional Design; Principles of Adult Learning; Assessment/Measurement & Evaluation; Principles of Teaching and Learning; Instructional Technology.

NOTE: Graduate-level research or statistics coursesdo notcount toward this requirement

1. Education: A master’s or doctoral degree in nursing (with a major emphasis in a role other than nursing education).

2. Experience: Two years or more employment in a nursing program in an academic institution within the last five years.
