BSN Clinical Experience
ABSN students participate in clinical experiences throughout a variety of clinical agencies including in-patient, out-patient and community settings in the greater Charleston area. Clinical rotations primarily take place at sites located on or close to the MUSC campus. As the state’s only comprehensive academic health science center, our ABSN students are afforded opportunities to learn hands-on patient care skills in some of the best settings available. The majority of rotations take place within MUSC Health’s University Hospital, Ashley River Tower, Children’s Hospital, and Institute of Psychiatry. Our ABSN program also offers rotations with clinical partners: the Ralph H. Johnson Veteran’s Administration Medical Center, Roper Hospital, Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital, Trident Medical Center, and Summerville Medical Center.
MUSC operates a 700-bed medical center, nationally recognized children’s hospital, the NCI-designated Hollings Cancer Center, a Level I trauma center, Institute of Psychiatry, more than 100 outreach locations across the state, and South Carolina’s only transplant center. Currently, the MUSC Children’s Hospital is ranked amongst U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals.” They are also nationally ranked and renowned in six pediatric specialties: cardiology and heart surgery, nephrology, urology, cancer, gastroenterology and GI surgery, and orthopedics. MUSC Health’s University Hospital is currently, nationally ranked in cancer, ENT, gynecology, nephrology, and orthopedics.
In addition to rotations in the clinical setting, the College of Nursing uses best practices simulation to provide a safe environment for learning psychomotor and critical thinking skills. Simulation experience also allows students to connect didactic learning with clinical learning. Simulation at the College of Nursing takes place in a skills lab on the third floor and the Healthcare Simulation Center on the first floor of our building. A new telepresence robot now allows faculty to remote into simulation experiences or the classroom.
